Community Opportunities

Plasticulture has started to become a very popular form of farming from weekend farmers to larger scale operations. Mel has always been a part of the community and has contributed a wealth of knowledge to those interested in learning more about Plasticulture practices. We are always interested in engaging and talk to anyone interested in learning more about our operations. We are in conversations with the local community about expanding our classes and consulting services. Please contact us about opportunities related to Plasticulture Farming.

Our farm can provide service learning and educational experiences for groups of participants of all ages. Below is a summary of some of the programming that we can accommodate.

EARLY CHILDHOOD AND ELEMENTARY

For young learners, we can offer education workshops for 1-2 hours that incorporate hands-on activities in order to actively engage students in topics about soil, insects, healthy eating,  etc.

MIDDLE AND HIGH SCHOOL

For older students, we offer workshops that are more in depth that cover 2-4 hours. The goal is to encourage group discussions and activities that include biology, propagation, water and soil quality, and healthy eating. We also like to talk about responsible farming and sustainability. We provide the opportunity to be hands-on in our hoop house space.

COLLEGE AND ADULT

These workshops contain a variety of information for those interested in learning about starting operations and/or improving upon current operations.  Workshops include a guided tour of our facility, facilitated group discussion and hands-on projects. We understand that this group may contain the widest variety of educational backgrounds and experience, therefore we will cover a range topics. Some of the topics can include:

  • Backyard Operations - Building, startup costs, propagation techniques, soil maintenance, harvesting, farm accounting.

  • Post Secondary - College students that have projects related to their degree can benefit from in-depth coverage of biology and propagation methods, plasticulture practices, and other advanced topics that relate to sustainable farming practices.

  • General Discussion - For those that are interested in just learning and touring the farm we can cover everything from soil preparation, planting, watering, and harvesting.

The workshops stay true to our theme and practices on the farm. These include include farm sustainability, nutrition, soil, and plasticulture. We're happy to work with groups interested in learning, developing, and experiencing first -hand farming.
